Weather Forecast for New Zealand Cities During the Solar Eclipse

Here are city-wise New Zealand Weather Forecast with eclipse date & times, plus weather considerations, so you can plan for the “Devil’s Horns” moment. All times in NZST (UTC +12).

Auckland, New Zealand Weather Forecast and Solar Eclipse Time

In Auckland, the partial solar eclipse will begin at 6:07 AM NZST on Monday 22 September 2025, and end at 8:05 AM NZST.You can expect about 60-61% of the Sun to be obscured at maximum around 6:55 AM

Weather-Forecast: early morning clouds or marine haze are possible. If skies clear toward the eastern horizon, the “Devil’s Horns” effect (Sun rising already partially eclipsed) may be visible. Coastal areas facing east will have better odds. Be sure to arrive before sunrise (~6:00 AM) to get set up.

Christchurch (Canterbury), NZ Weather and Solar Eclipse Time

Christchurch’s eclipse timeline: begins at 6:19 AM NZST, maximum at 7:08 AM NZST, ends at 8:18 AM NZST on 22 September 2025. Obscuration will be significant – about ~69% at peak.

Weather Forecast: Weather forecast suggests scattered clouds for Christchurch around that time. Visibility might be good if clouds are thin or broken, but some low-cloud or haze near the horizon could soften or hide the horns until the Sun is a little higher.

Wellington, New Zealand Weather Forecast and Solar Eclipse Time

In Wellington, the eclipse starts around 6:04 AM NZST, reaches maximum at approximately 7:04 AM NZST, and ends by about 8:15 AM NZST on 22 September. The coverage will be around 66-67% at peak.

Weather Forecast: Given Wellington’s coastal exposure and possibility of morning cloud / fog, horizon visibility may be compromised. If you can find a spot on the eastern coast with a clear eastern horizon and minimal obstruction, you stand a much better chance of seeing the early horn shapes.

Other Regions (Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, etc.) Solar Eclipse Time

  • Bay of Plenty: Eclipse roughly from 5:57 AM NZST to 8:10 AM NZST

  • Gisborne: ~ 5:55 AM NZST to 8:11 AM NZST

  • Hamilton / Waikato area: around 6:03 AM NZST start, ending ~ 8:11 AM NZST.

What To Watch & Recommendations for the Partial Solar Eclipse on Sept 22, 2025

  • The “Devil’s Horns” are best seen exactly at or just after sunrise, when the Sun emerges over the eastern horizon already partially covered by the Moon. For many NZ cities, that’s between ~5:55-6:10 AM NZST depending on location.

  • Check your local eastern horizon: hills, buildings, trees may block the lowest part of the Sun; find a spot with an open view.

  • Monitor evening / overnight weather forecasts for “low cloud”, “fog”, “marine layer” or “horizon haze”. These are the biggest threats to a clean “horned” sunrise.

  • Bring proper eclipse viewing gear (solar glasses / indirect methods) especially for that dawn moment—it’s bright enough to damage eyes, even with partial coverage.
